What is AFCAT?

AFCAT is the Air Force Common Admission Test organized and conducted by Indian Air Force biannually (AFCAT-1 and AFCAT-2); usually in the month of February and August to be notified in the month of June and December respectively. AFCAT Exam Eligibility:

Nationality criteria for all branches: Only Indian citizen.

1. Flying Branch:

  •             > Age limit:  20 to 24 years. Upper age limit is subject to relaxation up to 26 years for candidates holding a valid and current commercial pilot license issued by The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA- India).
  •             > Educational qualification: Graduate degree (min. 3 years) in any stream with minimum 60% marks or equivalent with Mathematics and Physics as subjects in 10+2 or B.E/ B.Tech (four years degree) or cleared section A & B exam of associate Membership of Institute of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India from a recognized university with minimum 60% marks. 
  •             > Physical Standards:
  •             > Height & Weight: 162.5 cm with correlated weight.
  •             > Vision: Minimum visual acuity 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in other eyes; correctable to 6/6 only for hypermetropia.

All other medical criteria are subject to evaluation by the Indian Air Force Authorities whose decision on the fitness would be final.

2. Ground Duty Branch:

  •    > Age limit:  20 to 26 years.
  •    > Educational qualification:



Administrative and logistics





Graduate degree in any stream (Min 3 years) or equivalent with min 60% marks from a recognized university or cleared section A & B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India with a minimum 60% marks or equivalent.

B.Com (min 3 years) or equivalent with minimum 60% marks from a recognized university.

MBA / MCA or MA / M Sc degree in English / Physics / Mathematics / Chemistry / Statistics / International relations / International studies / Defence studies / Psychology / Computer Science / IT / Management / Mass Communication / Journalism / Public Relation with minimum of 50% marks in aggregate all paper put together in Post-Graduation (Minimum two year) and 60% marks from a recognized university.


  •    > Physical Standards:

Height & Weight: Men- Minimum 157.7 cm; Women- Minimum 152 cm with correlated weight.

3. Technical Branch:

  1.    1. Aeronautical Engineer (Electronics) {AE (L)}.
  •          > Age limit:  20 to 26 years.
  •          > Educational qualification:
  •        > Candidate must have secured minimum 60% marks each in Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level and graduation (min. 3 years) from a recognised institution with at least 60% marks or equivalent, (OR)
  •        > Candidate must hold a graduation (minimum of 4 years)/ integrated post-graduation qualification in Engineering/ Technology from recognized University/ (OR)
  •        > Cleared Sections A and B exam of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India or Graduate membership exam of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers by actual studies who have scored minimum 60% marks or equivalent in the following disciplines:

AFCAT Selection Process:

Getting placed in Indian Air force involves four-step processes.

STEP-1:  Eligible candidates must clear AFCAT, and Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT – only for the technical branch)

STEP -2:  Successful candidates are called for SSB interview at any one of the Air Force Selection Boards (AFSB) located at Dehradun, Mysore, Gandhinagar or Varanasi for further evaluation STAGE-1 & STAGE-2.

STAGE-1 comprises the following tests:

  •    > Officer Intelligence Rating Test.
  •    > Picture Perception and Discussion Test

STAGE-1 is a screening test; the disqualified candidates are required to leave at once the results are announced.

STAGE-2 comprises the following tests which are conducted from the next four to five days.

  •    > Psychological Tests (Written tests).
  •    > Group Tests (Interactive Indoor and Outdoor Activities).
  •    > Personal Interview.
  •    > Computerized Pilot Selection System (CPSS) test (only for the flying branch on the fifth day).

STEP- 3: Candidates who have nailed STEP-2 and recommended by SSB will be undergoing medical examination either at Air Force Central Medical Establishment (AFCME), New Delhi or Institute of Aviation Medicine, Bangalore.

STEP-4: Finally, an All India Merit List is declared. This list is compiled based on the candidate's performance (both written test and AFSB interview), on the condition of being medically fit.
